Expert care for pelvic girdle pain, SPD, and pregnancy-related discomfort. Dutch-trained physiotherapists specializing in pregnancy and postpartum recovery.

Pregnancy pelvic pain is not something you just put up with

Pelvic pain during pregnancy shouldn't be something you just "put up with." Many pregnant women in Barcelona are told it's normal, given a support belt, and sent home with "it'll get better after birth." Sometimes it does. Often it doesn't. That's not how we work. At Physiotherapy Barcelona, we specialize in pregnancy-related pelvic pain using evidence-based manual therapy techniques proven safe and effective during pregnancy. Our physiotherapists are trained in pelvic girdle pain, SPD (symphysis pubis dysfunction), and postpartum recovery—the same approach trusted across Northern Europe. We treat pregnant women throughout all trimesters and support postpartum recovery. Safe, hands-on treatment that actually works.

Pregnancy pain we treat

Pelvic girdle pain (PGP)

Pain in your pelvis, hips, lower back, or groin. Worse when walking, climbing stairs, turning in bed, or getting out of the car.

Symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD)

Sharp pain at the front of your pelvis. Feels like your pubic bone is separating or grinding. Makes walking extremely painful.

Lower back pain

Pregnancy-related lower back pain from changing posture, weight distribution, and loosening ligaments. Different from regular back pain.

Sciatica during pregnancy

Shooting pain down your leg from your growing baby pressing on nerves or from pelvic misalignment.

Round ligament pain

Sharp pain in your abdomen or groin when moving quickly. We can help you manage it and strengthen supporting muscles.

Postpartum pelvic pain

Pelvic pain that continues after birth. Diastasis recti, weak pelvic floor, or misalignment from delivery.

Why pelvic pain happens during pregnancy

Your body releases relaxin hormone, which loosens ligaments to prepare for birth. This is normal. But when your pelvis becomes unstable and your muscles can't compensate, you get pain. Most doctors say "it's normal, it'll pass." Technically true—it is common. But it doesn't mean you have to suffer through it. Proper treatment makes a massive difference.
  • Pelvic joint instability from relaxin
  • Weak or unbalanced pelvic floor muscles
  • Poor posture from changing center of gravity
  • Previous pelvic injuries (even from years ago)
  • Carrying multiple babies or larger baby
  • Second/third pregnancy (ligaments looser faster)

How we treat pregnancy pelvic pain

If you've seen a doctor or midwife about pelvic pain, you might have been given a support belt and told to rest. That helps some women. For many, it's not enough. Our approach is different.

We assess your entire pelvis

Not just where it hurts. We check pelvic alignment, muscle balance, movement patterns, and how your body is compensating.

Manual therapy safe for pregnancy

Gentle joint mobilization, muscle release, and pelvic realignment techniques. All safe throughout pregnancy. No machines, no forceful manipulation.

Pelvic stability exercises

We teach you how to activate your deep core and pelvic floor muscles properly. Specific exercises for YOUR pelvic problem—not generic pregnancy exercises.

Movement education

How to get out of bed without pain. How to walk, sit, and move without aggravating your pelvis. Small changes make a big difference.

Postpartum recovery plan

If you're still pregnant, we prepare you for birth and recovery. If you've already given birth, we help you heal properly.

What a session looks like

All techniques are safe throughout pregnancy. We adapt based on your trimester and comfort.
1

Assessment (20 minutes)

We talk about your pain, your pregnancy, and what movements hurt. Then we assess your pelvic alignment, muscle strength, and movement patterns. Safe, gentle assessment.

2

Manual therapy (25 minutes)

Hands-on treatment to realign your pelvis, release tight muscles, and restore proper movement. We work within your comfort level. You control the session.

3

Exercise & education (15 minutes)

We teach you exercises to stabilize your pelvis and manage pain at home. How to move safely, what to avoid, and how to prepare for birth.

When to start treatment

First trimester

If you had pelvic pain in a previous pregnancy, start early. We can help prevent it from developing this time.

Second trimester

Most pelvic pain starts around weeks 12-20 as relaxin increases. This is the ideal time to start treatment before it gets worse.

Third trimester

Even if you're 32 weeks and struggling to walk, we can help. It's not too late. Many women see significant improvement in just 2-3 sessions.

Postpartum

If pelvic pain continues after birth or you have diastasis recti, we guide you through safe postpartum recovery. Usually starting 6-8 weeks after delivery.

Why choose us

I highly recommend this place. I have been injured twice because of running. I first saw Koen Williams for a knee pain who really took time to fix my running technique, never felt the pain again. I then came back to him for a hip pain, he sent me to see his colleague Vince Van Den Elsen. I experienced the same professionalism, he also took time to find the problem and fixed it within 3 sessions. Thank you very much to both of them!

Yannik Stumm

Best physio experience I had in Barcelona! Daniela always finds the root cause of my sports injuries and helps with both treatment and exercises/stretching routines. Also amazing that everything can be in German and other team members also cover other languages. Juanita is always super welcoming and organizes everything. Overall can absolutely recommend to come here!

Emily Kerr

Well to say I have never had such a possitive healthcare experience is an understatement. I have had chronic pain for over 8 years after complications from knee surgery along with ptsd. Basically I was going to another physio for a year that didn't realise that my ankle was fractured. After I had a scan I came here for help and this is the first time in my life having someone listen about my pain. Not only am I off crutches again but there was a chance that I'll be able to run again. Thanks to everyone here for helping with my recovery in a foreign country!!

I had my therapy at Physiotherapy Barcelona in Barcelona and I'm very satisfied. The sessions were professional, empathetic and truly helpful. Many thanks for the excellent support!

Neil

I was having constant issues with my Achilles tendon preventing me from running or exercising in general freely. Koen was able to identify that my running style was aggravating the injury. He showed me how I was running and how I should be running to ease the strain on my Achilles. Through technical practise and massages on the affected area, it gradually improved. How Koen taught me to run inspired me to complete the marathon a few months later, which would not have been possible without the treatment. I'm so glad I went to Koen's clinic!

Frequently Asked Questions

Is physiotherapy safe during pregnancy?
Yes. All our techniques are evidence-based and safe throughout pregnancy. We adapt treatment based on your trimester and comfort level.
When should I start treatment?
As soon as you notice pain. Early treatment prevents it from getting worse. Even in third trimester, we can help significantly.
Will this help me prepare for birth?
Yes. We teach you pelvic floor awareness, optimal birth positions, and breathing techniques that can help during labor.
Can you help after I've given birth?
Absolutely. We specialize in postpartum recovery including diastasis recti, pelvic floor weakness, and continued pelvic pain.
Do I need a doctor's referral?
No. You can book directly. If you want to claim insurance, we provide detailed invoices in English.
What should I wear?
Comfortable clothes you can move in. We'll need to assess your pelvis and lower back, so loose clothing works best.
