Dry Needling
Dry needling is a relatively new and effective method within physiotherapy for treating muscle pain (myofascial pain syndrome). A thin needle is inserted into the affected muscle to provoke a local twitch response and make the muscle fibers relax.

How Dry Needling Works
Identify
The therapist locates trigger points through careful palpation of your muscles. Trigger points are sensitive areas that become painful when compressed and can cause referred pain.
Insert
Thin, sterile needles are inserted directly into the trigger point. The needle is "dry": no liquid is injected. The effect comes from the needle stimulating the trigger point.
Release
A brief muscle twitch followed by deep relaxation as the trigger point releases. You may feel a short sharp sensation and then a deep ache as the muscle relaxes.
What Causes Trigger Points?
What to Expect After Treatment
Immediate Relief
Immediate reduction in muscle tension and pain is common after a dry needling session.
Short-term Soreness
Mild muscle soreness for 24–48 hours is normal, similar to how muscles feel after intense exercise.
Recovery Tips
Stay well hydrated and do light activity with gentle stretching to support a faster recovery.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is dry needling the same as acupuncture?
No. Although both use thin needles, they are fundamentally different. Dry needling is based on Western anatomy and neurophysiology, targeting specific trigger points in muscles. Acupuncture is rooted in traditional Chinese medicine and follows energy meridians. Our physiotherapists use dry needling as part of a hands-on, physiotherapy-based approach.
Does dry needling hurt?
You may feel a brief sharp sensation when the needle enters the muscle, followed by a deep ache or muscle twitch as the trigger point releases. Most patients find this tolerable and short-lived. The sensation typically lasts only seconds.
How much does a dry needling session cost?
Dry needling is applied as part of a full physiotherapy session at €80. There is no separate charge. It is one of the techniques your physiotherapist may use during your session.
