Physiotherapy Barcelona

The Nordic Approach to Physiotherapy

How Dutch and Scandinavian physiotherapy principles deliver better, faster results — 60 minutes, hands-on, focused on treating the root cause, not just easing symptoms.

The Nordic Approach to Physiotherapy

What is the Nordic approach to physiotherapy?

Nordic-style physiotherapy is the standard of care across the Netherlands and Scandinavia: full 60-minute sessions, hands-on manual therapy, and an evidence-based focus on finding and fixing the cause of pain, not just easing the symptoms. It is what Dutch and Scandinavian patients quietly take for granted — and rarely find when they move abroad. Our team is Dutch-trained, brought up in this tradition, and we run the practice the way we were taught at home. That means no rotating between machines, no electrodes doing the work for us, and no 15-minute conveyor-belt appointments. Every session is one-on-one, undivided attention, with a physiotherapist who is actively treating you for the full hour. The contrast with the typical Spanish clinic model is real. In Barcelona, physiotherapy is often passive: you lie down, machines are applied, and you leave. Northern European training builds on the opposite philosophy — active rehabilitation, education, and lasting results.

What you get in every session

Three principles define every appointment with us. They are not extras or upgrades. They are the baseline of how Northern European physiotherapy is practised.

60-Minute sessions

A full hour of focused treatment. No rushing, no overlap with another patient, no shortcuts on assessment.

Hands-On manual therapy, no machines

Skilled manual therapy by a trained physiotherapist. No electrodes, no ultrasound, no heat pads doing the work for us.

Treat the cause, not the symptom

We find the root problem and fix it. Pain relief without addressing why is just buying time.

How this differs from typical Barcelona clinics

Most physiotherapy in Barcelona follows a different model — shorter, machine-led, symptom-focused. Here is the side-by-side, plainly stated.

I highly recommend this place. I have been injured twice because of running. I first saw Koen Williams for a knee pain who really took time to fix my running technique, never felt the pain again. I then came back to him for a hip pain, he sent me to see his colleague Vince Van Den Elsen. I experienced the same professionalism, he also took time to find the problem and fixed it within 3 sessions. Thank you very much to both of them!

Yannik Stumm

Best physio experience I had in Barcelona! Daniela always finds the root cause of my sports injuries and helps with both treatment and exercises/stretching routines. Also amazing that everything can be in German and other team members also cover other languages. Juanita is always super welcoming and organizes everything. Overall can absolutely recommend to come here!

Emily Kerr

Well to say I have never had such a possitive healthcare experience is an understatement. I have had chronic pain for over 8 years after complications from knee surgery along with ptsd. Basically I was going to another physio for a year that didn't realise that my ankle was fractured. After I had a scan I came here for help and this is the first time in my life having someone listen about my pain. Not only am I off crutches again but there was a chance that I'll be able to run again. Thanks to everyone here for helping with my recovery in a foreign country!!

I had my therapy at Physiotherapy Barcelona in Barcelona and I'm very satisfied. The sessions were professional, empathetic and truly helpful. Many thanks for the excellent support!

Neil

I was having constant issues with my Achilles tendon preventing me from running or exercising in general freely. Koen was able to identify that my running style was aggravating the injury. He showed me how I was running and how I should be running to ease the strain on my Achilles. Through technical practise and massages on the affected area, it gradually improved. How Koen taught me to run inspired me to complete the marathon a few months later, which would not have been possible without the treatment. I'm so glad I went to Koen's clinic!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Nordic approach to physiotherapy?
It is the model of physiotherapy practised across the Netherlands and Scandinavia: full 60-minute sessions, hands-on manual therapy by a single therapist, evidence-based methods, and a focus on treating the root cause of pain rather than just easing symptoms. It is built on active rehabilitation and patient education, not passive machine-based treatment.
How is this different from typical Barcelona clinics?
Most clinics in Barcelona run shorter sessions (often 15 to 30 minutes), apply electrical machines and heat pads, and focus on symptom relief. We run a full hour of one-on-one hands-on treatment, no machines, and structure every session around finding and fixing the actual cause. The result is faster recovery and fewer sessions needed overall.
Do you use any machines or electrical equipment?
No. Our treatment is entirely hands-on manual therapy, mobilisation and active rehabilitation exercise. We do not rely on TENS, ultrasound, electrostimulation or heat pads. Skilled manual technique by a trained physiotherapist gets better results — and that is what you are paying for.
Why 60 minutes instead of 30?
Because proper physiotherapy needs time. A serious assessment, a thorough physical examination, hands-on treatment and a clear home programme cannot be done in a quarter of an hour. Northern European standards have always been a full hour, and we are not willing to cut that corner.
Is this approach suitable for all conditions?
It is suitable for the vast majority of musculoskeletal complaints — back and neck pain, sports injuries, post-surgical rehabilitation, chronic pain, posture-related issues, and recovery from overuse. If during your assessment we determine your condition is outside our scope, we will tell you directly and refer you to the right specialist.
